Sorry, I'm about to write a review on a product I do NOT own (but was thinking of buying).I did remember seeing these in a store a couple years back, and they did feel really good in the hand, though.

But the main point of my posting is to help people understand all the issues about stainless steel rusting or not rusting.This is a great FAQ from Specialty Steel Industry of North America. ([...]):

1. What makes stainless steel stainless?

Answer: Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 % chromium. It is this element that reacts with the oxygen in the air to form a complex chrome-oxide surface layer that is invisible but strong enough to prevent further oxygen from "staining" (rusting) the surface. Higher levels of chromium and the addition of other alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum enhance this surface layer and improve the corrosion resistance of the stainless material. See the "Stainless Steel Primer" for more information.

2. What is the difference between 18/8 and 18/10 stainless steel?

Answer: The first number is the amount of chromium that is contained in the stainless, i.e., 18 is 18% chromium. The second number is the amount of nickel, i.e., 8 stands for 8% nickel. So 18/8 means that this stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 18/10 is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The higher the numbers the more corrosion resistant the material. 18/0 is a misleading designation. Both 18/8 and 18/10 contain nickel and are part of the grade family "300 series" stainless. 18/0 means that there is 18% chromium but zero nickel. When there is no nickel the stainless grade family is the "400 series". 400 series are not as corrosion resistant as the 300 series and are magnetic, where the 300 series are non-magnetic.

3. Can stainless steel rust? Why? (I thought stainless did not rust!)

Answer: Stainless does not "rust" as you think of regular steel rusting with a red oxide on the surface that flakes off. If you see red rust it is probably due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting. Look at the source of the rusting and see if you can remove it from the surface. If the iron is embedded in the surface, you can try a solution of 10% nitric and 2% hydrofluoric acid at room temperature or slightly heated. Wash area well with lots and lots of water after use. Commercially available "pickling paste" can also be used. See "The Care and Cleaning of Stainless Steel" for more information.

Grilla Gear 3-Piece BBQ Tool Set Review

Grilla gear products seem to be well built, but they just don't last. The wraparound handles on the barbecue tools broke at the seam on 2 of the three tools during the second season of use. The black coating flakes off too. It's made to look anodized, but it's actually paint which may or may not be heat resistant.

I also owned the perforated vegetable skillet. Same problem with the coating. It started to chip of after I had used it three times. I will never buy another grilla gear product.

Masterbuilt 30-Inch Smoker Cover Review

Where does your smoker live?Outdoors, like mine? Why do you want a cover?To keep the rain off?Hah! Not with this cover.

This cover fits the 30" Masterbuilt smoker nicely, seems reasonably well made, but a little expensive for what it is.Still I was pleased enough with it, and I was glad to replace the plastic garbage bag I had been using while waiting for this to arrive.That night it rained, and I was glad to have my smoker sitting safely in its new cover.The next day, however, I discovered that I might as well have left my smoker in the rain with no cover at all.The entire smoker was soaking wet.What a disappointment.

If you are looking solely for a dust cover, I imagine you will be happy enough with this product.If you are looking to protect your outdoor use appliance from the outdoors, this is a waste of money.I am back to using a garbage bag, although I do use this cover over the garbage bag for appearance's sake.

I guess you can't expect too much from Masterbuilt.I noticed a recipe on their web site (Hamburger Jerky) in which "marinade" was repeatedly referred to as "marinate sauce".Someone needs to let them know that marinate is a verb, and that marinade is the "sauce" with which you "marinate".Maybe you will.But I digress.

SUMMARY:

Nice looking cover, fits well, keeps wolves, eagles, and ferrets from attacking your smoker, but does absolutely nothing to stop the rain.

GENESIS EP-310 BLACK NAT Review

This review is for the Weber S-310, the stainless steel version of the E-310, with SS grates and flavor bars like the EP-310. (I got the natural gas version. It comes with the hose already attached, plus the brass coupler.) The front, shelves, and hood are SS. The sides of the hood and shelves are gray aluminum, and the sides and back are gray painted steel. All the parts are of a high quality. Note: The newest S model has a frame around the front doors, not the solid front as shown in the Amazon picture. I prefer the cleaner looking solid front, but this version makes it have the same look and production across the Genesis line.

Everything comes very safely and securely packaged in a large box with lots of cardboard and plastic bags. The various nuts and bolts are in several separate packages. Most of the stainless steel is covered with a rubbery coating that is fairly easily removed. I suggest using a cloth to hold the part being stripped since the SS is a fingerprint magnet. The instructions are mostly pictures, often small. It is easy to make a mistake that can cause a problem further down the assembly. For instance, the clips that have a nut attached should always face the inside of whatever they are being attached to. The four wheels have two that lock. Those two should be placed in the front so they can be reached.

The instructions show two people lifting the top unit out of the box. One can do it if you remove the hood first. Simply remove the retaining bolts and put the hood aside. Next, remove all the parts packed inside the top unit. What is left is easy to lift. You can also slice down the edges of the box with a shop knife and lay the sides flat for easier access. Make sure you have lots of clean flat space in which to work, such as your driveway. Carefully lay all the parts out for easy access and identification.

Use a 7/16" socket wrench for most bolts. One bolt is 11mm, though. The included wrench is very impractical, and is only needed to adjust the front doors to square. You will need a #1 and a #2 Phillips screwdriver for the screws. A power drill will work, but carefully set the torque. Putting it together took me over 2 hours. The excellent design virtually assures proper assembly. After hooking up to the natural gas line, I turned the unit on high. The first burner has the electric spark so it should be opened first. The knobs may feel a bit loose, but that is because they are attached to springy gas regulators. The push-button spark generator is quite effective. To test, and to clean the interior, I let it heat up to 650 degrees - much hotter than my previous grill could ever go. It did so rather quickly, and could have kept going! (The thermometer goes up to 700 degrees.) At that high temperature, the hood handle remained relatively cool, except at the very sides, where it was a little warm. Opening the hood sends out a blast of hot air. You can then appreciate having the control knobs placed well to the side instead of on the front.

The warranty is the best in the business. The parts quality assures full utilization of that warranty, justifying the higher initial cost. It reminds me of another industry leader, Anderson Windows and Doors. There is simply no substitute for the best of something.

Grill Pod Review

We purchased our grill from a local Bar-B-Que shop.We chose it over the Green Egg because it came with more accesories as part of the price. (Pizza stone, gloves, ash scraper, parafin starters.I sold my kettle grill and put the money toward this lovely grill.

Q: What is a ceramic grill, what can I do with it?
A: A ceramic grill is just that, a grill made entirely out of ceramic. The ceramic enables you to grill (like a kettle grill), smoke foods (like a smoker) and bake.It is extraordinarily efficient and has the ability to retain temperatures for hours using less fuel.
We smoked an 8lb. pork shoulder from 7am until 5pm at 265F using a small bucket of lump charcoal.

Q: Can you use briquettes?
A: No, we use only lump charcoal, NEVER use that disgusting match-ready stuff. No matter how long it burns, the food still tastes like lighter fluid

Q: What is the difference between the Grill Pod and the Green Egg (or for that matter the other ones on the market (Cajun)?)
A: Where the ceramic is made.One company uses ceramic from Mexico, and the other uses refractory ceramic from China (Which if my research is right is the Grill Pod).

Some of the Green Egg accessories are compatible with the Grill Pod, in fact we just purchased the small Green Egg table and put our Grill Pod in it.

For avid grilling fans, I highly recommend the investment.Green Egg fans are avid fans, devoted fans. But if you need to spare some cost and gain a little more in accesories, the Grill Pod is equal in performance.

Horizon Smokers 3 Inch Smoker Thermometer Review

The first time I used this in my new smoker I also used a digital probe thermometer just for comparison.The Horizon thermo read low by 75 degrees.No worries though, there's a calibration screw on the back of the dial (although there are no instructions with it to let you know this!), so I calibrated it using boiling water.Now it's accurate between about 200 and 250 degrees which is where I'm usually aiming for, but for lower or higher temperature ranges it's still off by about 50 degrees.It's usable, but I expected better performance for the price.Oh, and by the way, don't be fooled by the Horizon website - yes it's an American company, but stamped prominently on the back of the thermo: "Made in China".Surprise, surprise!

It's sad.There was a time when Oneida meant quality.Those days are gone--now Oneida is just a nameplate, and its products are manufactured in generic, no name factories in China just like the X brand junk you can get at any budget store.

This set is low quality.The pieces are made from very heavy steel.Why?Because the steel they use is 18/0 stainless, the lowest quality stainless you can get.They have to make the pieces thick or they'll bend.Compare that to my 10 year old Oneida set, made from 18/8 stainless.They're thin and light as a feather because it's high quality steel.

Also, they include an insert in the packaging to tell you not to use these with acidic foods and that they must be washed right away to prevent damage.Why?Because low quality 18/0 stainless will be etched by food, but higher quality stainless (18/8) will not.In other words, don't fall for the hype.If it's cheap junk you want, buy a cheap junk brand and pay a cheap junk price.If you want quality, don't buy Oneida.

I have a Char Griller extra large gas/charcoal/smoker/external burner combo unit that is 80" long, 27" wide and about 3' tall. I spent $35 for the Char Griller "plastic" cover that lasted only about a year in the sun and weather. I looked and looked for a new cover that would fit and finally found this one. It turned out to be a great find and a great buy! I love the quality of the material and the fit is perfect even though it is a universal type cover. Very good product for a very reasonable price.

I use lighting devices like this every day to light candles at our bed & breakfast establishment.I was excited when I saw that Zippo had put one on the market because I was aware of Zippo's reputation for elegantly designed, reliable lighters.I have been disappointed to discover that although the thing looks pretty and appears to be well-made, it is clumsy and awkward to operate.The safety button is in the wrong place to be comfortably depressed while striking the lighter.Compared to other devices of this type, the Zippo does not have much distance between the flame and your hand making it difficult to light wicks that are down inside jar-type candles.Also, the fuel-level indicator is nearly impossible to see making it difficult to know when the thing needs re-filling.I am much happier with way cheaper such devices that are more versatile, user-friendly, and ergonomically designed.

Charcoal Companion Magnetic Flexible Mini Grill Light Review

I' the owner of [...] , a smoked meats and grilling recipe site. I do allot of cooking and in allot of cases from sun up to late in the evening. My porch light is not located close enough to my pit and I often ended up trying to mop my meats with sauces or season them in the dark or try and hold a flash light. Both of these options were not working out. I looked all over for something small and bright. There are allot of clamp on models and lights of much larger size. I don't want to hassle with a desk lamp sized light. It's more to get in the way. This unit is inexpensive, durable and very bright. It can be carried in your pocket and pulled out and attached as needed. It's held in place by a strong magnet and I think it works out great. See my full review with pictures on my site. I'm very disappointed in these skewers.After lots of research I narrowed it down to two choices - either these or the Stephen Rauchlein 3/8 inch ones.I went with these because of the price and I regret it.These skewers rotate under the weight of the meat just like round skewers.They aren't actually flat, they're more ovular.Sure, you can use two of these just like with bamboo skewers and turn your meat with no problems, but that defeats the purpose for me.I'm going to buy the Stephen Rauchlein ones (maybe several of the different widths) after learning this mistake the hard way.

This grill is really nothing more than the charcoal pan from the more expensive Brinkman "Gourmet" smoker.The gourmet smoker can grill or smoke, and I've used this numerous times to grill.We find it to be just large enough to grill for our family of 4.The coal pan is pretty heavy gauge metal.The outer pan with the feet is thinner, but doesn't get too hot.You may want to consider buying the Gourmet instead.If you buy it at a home center, for about 1/3 more in price, you get a whole smoker.Either way, it's rugged, and small enough to take anywhere.

Bayou Classic 7850 0-30 PSI Adjustable High-Pressure Propane Regulator for 1/4-Inch Inlets and Outlets Review

I did a bit of research and this was the best high pressure regulator for the price. The pressure is easily adjusted just like a air compressor regulator. I do not have a pressure gauge on my system but it seems to be a pretty fine adjustment. 1/4npt fitting might be a little too small for some higher flow applications but it does have enough flow to keep up with an outdoor burner with 3 large burners. I am able to boil the 6.5 gallons of water for my beer wort very quickly.

This weighs 65lbs and theirs is 32 lbs for the same size.Heavy duty unit, solid welds and you get the grille(good quality), poker, spark cover(good quality, not lightweight) and heavy duty cover for it. Finish is a "rusted film" that needs an occasional vinyl brush scrubbing per the instructions.Such a heavy duty unit I doubt rust would be an issue. Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer Review

I am an avid griller, BBQ'er and Smoker (year rounder, competitions, 15 pound meats etc...).I purchased this product after enjoying using the Williams/Sonoma remote probe temperature gage for quite some time.I now believe that a remote temperature gage is a must.

This particular product works as advertised and I am happy with it.I would describe it as average, nothing special.It seems to work well, has a decent transmitting distance (although I hear there was a bad batch out there that were very weak).The digits are large and easily readable in a glance.The alarm couldn't be louder.The back light is bright.And the probes seem high quality that will last a while.

However, it has a few annoying traits: 1) The on/off switch on the Transmitter is located behind the battery door which means you have to take off the battery door to access it, not a huge problem as the door access screw only takes a quick half turn with a penny or fingernail.2)Setting the Food and Smoker alert levels is also an annoying as the device only has one "adjust" button that scrolls up one degree at a time.This means that if you currently have a 180 degree setting (beef well done) and wish to change it to 140 degrees (beef rare) you must scroll the digits past the max setting 370 degrees (who cooks anything to this temperature?) around to the minimum setting, and if you miss it or forget to push enter you have to go all the way around again.It reminds me of the early digital alarm clock radios where if you passed 7 AM wake up time you had to go all the way past 7 PM to get back to 7 AM.The feature can be VERY annoying, especially since most other remote probes have both and UP and DOWN buttons, but they don't have the smoker temperature probe that this one does.

Overall I'd buy another one but I wouldn't pay too much for it.

Landmann USA 590130 Black Dog 28 Charcoal Grill Review

It is now May 28, 2010. I Purchased this grill (2) years ago.... I figure it only gets about (3) months or so a year of use before being packed away for the season, so the grill has seen approx 6 months of use over my 2 years of ownership. When I went to use it for my 3rd season the unit was totally unusable. RUSTED TOTALLY THROUGH!!!.

I contacted the manufacturer, LANDMANN USA, sent them photos detailing the damage, advising them the unit was always kept covered as well including pictures of the cover on the unit showing how it actually molded itself to the unit from being covered so much. Rather than trying to resolve this situation,they put me through numerous voice mails, promised to return calls and never did and finally accused me of keeping the unit exposed to the elements, not maintaining the grill and it rusting away was all my fault. They actually accused me and are trying to pass off their choice to use poor quality materials in making this grill as if it were my fault the unit rusted away.

Contact Me, I will be happy to provide you copies of our back & forth correspondence if there's any doubt.

The grill is a piece of _______! They claim to use "Heavy Duty Steel", at who's standards?... yea if you compare the wall thickness to aluminum foil. My unit actually has rust holes in the Ash Tray & Side Walls.

I feel I'm fair, I give honest reviews. I've given this manufacturer every opportunity to resolve this issue and restore my confidence in their company and they flat out would rather accuse me of not caring for my belongings while I can prove otherwise.

At this point I have contacted the Georgia State Department Of Consumer Affairs and have registered a complaint against Landmann USA.

Unless they make a better effort to show how good of a company they are and stand behind their products, I would not recommend this grill.

It's up to them.

Grill Smoker Box with Wood Chips Set Review

I have always been a charcoal fan, but I like the convenience of having gas. So I missed my smoke flavor in some of my favorites like brisket, beer can chicken, and ribs so I decided to give this a try, as everything else I tried didn't give as much smoke as I wanted. So I was amazed to see so much of smoke coming out of my grill with the lid closed. I opened the lid to check on my chicken and was happy to see the smoke box working very well. It smoked the meat very well. I cant wait to use it with my brisket and ribs. It fits right under my grill plates and heats up very quickly.

The only negative that I can find is that because it does smoke so much, you will have to keep refilling it with chips a little more than normal if your cooking for long periods of time. How I see it is the more smoke, the better.

Char-Broil Patio Bistro Electric Grill Review

I have had a Char Broil Electic Grill for almost two yearsnow. I recieve consistant results in summer and winter where thetempature differences have other grills difficult to use. I particully enjoy it when I use it to grill fish. Unlike gas grills the airflow inside an electric grill is almost non-existant. This translates to cooked but moist meats. This grill is easy to clean, and I don't have to remember to trun off the propane at the tank. refilled.The grill is easy to movearound the outside of my house depending on where I want to either just cook for the family, or to the backyard to entertain guests. I have used wood to add smoke flavor even though Char Broil recommends aganist it. I just place the wood chips on a small piece of metal on the heating element and everything is fine. The grill works a lot better if you clean it when it gets blackened inside, and the fact that I add wood chips does accelerate this process. It is not a difficilt task to clean the grill.
This grill is great when you are in a hurry too, electricy is fast. The best outdoor cooking product I have ever owned.

Sojoe Rustic Firepit-stars & Moon Review

We've owned our Sojoe firepit for several years now, and it was an excellent purchase. I strongly recommend this firepit.

The firepit has held up very well over the years. The grill is well made, non-warping, and well-fitted to the fire pit. We have a nice BBQ, so we thought we wouldn't use the grill for the firepit. But we use it all the time, and it's really greatfor large gatherings when we get both BBQs going. We also love the screen. We live in a wooded area, and it makes us feel better that large embers can't float out of the fire. The best part is the waterproof cover, though. You have to have one, or the firepit will be a nightmare. It is a major pain to be scooping water and wet ash out of the bottom of a firepit. Plus, wet ash can corrode the bottom of the pit, so you want to be able to keep some dry sand on the bottom. Our cover has faded over the years, but it's just as pliable and waterproof as it was when we bought it. It's also nice because we can store some wood in the firepit itself, and we always have a couple of very dry logs to start a fire with.

The firepit is a perfect depth, and I certainly wouldn't buy a shallow one. This one is deep enough to contain the fire and let you keep adding logs without having anything roll off onto your feet. The cutouts provide good airflow, and there is a screen behind the cutouts to keep large embers in the pit. Excellent design. I can't praise it enough.

The ring around the outside works very well as a handle, which I use more often than I would have thought. It is also far enough away from the fire that you can rest your feet on it without melting your toes. And it's very handy for proping up marshmallow sticks and the fire poker.

The fire poker is absoloutely necessary and well done. The crook at the end will allow you to remove a hot grill or screen from the fire, as well as serving as a regular log poker.

After having owned this one, I wouldn't buy anything else. This fire pit has performed exceptionally well for us, and I'll buy another Sojoe when the time comes.

As fair warning, though, the fire pit is heavy, especially when you put a couple inches of sand in the bottom. I "spin" it on one leg at a time when I have to move it. Whenever we actually pick it up, my husband and I usually do it together. It's possible to pick it up with just one person, but it will be very heavy and cumbersome even for someone quite fit.

Also as fair warning, the fire-pit comes pre-weathered, and it is covered with an incredible amount of orange rust powder that will get all over you as you put it together (at least ours did). Pay attention to where you decide to put it together (not on the heirloom white rug) and to what you're wearing as you assemble it. Eventually all that rusty powder goes away and the firepit is just a nice rustic brown, but be prepared for a lot of orange rust powder when you first get it. A good wipe down will make it much more manageable.

My BBQ Grill was in complete darkness before I had the Zelco Bug-off BBQ light.This light is very effective.It has a toggle switch for bug repellent (off, one bug type noise, another bug type noise, and then a dragon fly repellent noise).If you extend the arm, the light automatically turns on, with or without a bug repellent noise.This means you don't need to hear those high pitched noises (and you can hear them) if you don't want to.

My grill has no place to clip this on, but that is no problem.With the weight of the 4 D batteries, it sits securely on the side of my grill.In order to use the clip on though, you will need a totally flat ledge on the side of the grill.

I have owned this light for almost 2 years now and I am completely satisfied.
